Late Day Cliffside, Caballo Lake State Park, Caballo NM, April 22, 2012
Do I see what I think I see?
Yes I do. That's a Great Horned Owl up there on the cliff across the river, waiting for the sun to set. And to his left is his mate on the nest deep in a hole in the cliff. A fellow camper, Winnie, told me I might find a nesting pair up there. She had seen them up there last year.
Sure wish I could get closer but there's a river in the way.

Few genes are required
One's brain is powerfully activated by learning that there are only 30,000 genes in the human genome. That is only twice as many as in the fruit fly, not renowned for its calculating ability, and about as many as a garden weed. Geneticists are sorely vexed that so few genes are required to make something as complex and clever as a geneticist.
