Pancho Villa State Park, Columbus NM, February 13, 2008
Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus NM is about 30 miles south of Deming NM and just north of the border at Palomas, a popular destination for those looking for inexpensive medical and dental work in Mexico. Or a fine lunch at the Pink Store right over the border.

Nights I've camped here
- Friday, January 15, 2010 - Bosque Birdwatchers RV Park, San Antonio NM
- Yesterday my friends Kate & Terry invited me along for a sunset photo shoot of the Sandhill Cranes gathering to roost in the shallow ponds along the highway at the north end of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I've seen the cranes flying between their roosting and feeding grounds down at Percha Dam State Park and at Pancho Villa State Park and I've seen them feeding with the cows here and there but this was my first experience of them roosting. - Saturday, January 9, 2010 - Pancho Villa State Park, Columbus NM
- The weather seems to be colder than usual all over this winter and here is no exception at the moment. Below normal temps (in the 40s) and a breezy wind chill kept most folks inside today. Even the long-eared owls who usually spend the day in the evergreens here found shelter elsewhere. Brrrr.... Image: Hooking Up, Pancho Villa State Park, Columbus NM, January 8, 2010.
- Friday, January 8, 2010 - Pancho Villa State Park, Columbus NM
- This will be a nice quiet place to take a break from all the traveling of the last couple of weeks and I think I'll stay through the weekend. If I didn't have to be out of the park system for the next New Mexico employee furlough on the 15th I might stay longer. All the parks will be closed the nights of the 14th and 15th and I'll have to find a night camp elsewhere those nights. What a pain. - Today was a day of domestic catching up - doing laundry, stocking up on supplies - and by the time I finished and wandered over to Rockhound State Park I found all the hookup sites spoken for. Rockhound is a popular park and I wasn't surprised to find it full but the much larger Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus NM is nearly empty. I wonder why. Relive Your Traumas
I suppose you have to relive your traumas in a way that is somewhat controlled and contained in order to move on from them. Some things you can walk quickly away from and never look back and other things bid you look again and again until you see something of the truth of them. I believe you have to let yourself remember and relive, that you have to find a way to settle with your past because you and it are always going to occupy the same headspace - you cannot separate yourself from anything you have ever done or seen or thought. You have to be able to look at the elements of the past without flinching and I believe that sometimes takes a few kicks at the cat. Or it does for me, anyway. It doesn't change anything - but it makes it easier to be comfortable in my skin.
