- Back on January 9th I started a project to update the bones of this website. There were lots of things bugging me, the big one being poor navigation. Stuff accumulates and there are now about 1,500 pages here on lots of unrelated topics. It's a mess. Image: Rio Grande River, Percha Dam State Park, Arrey NM, March 26, 2009.

- More onions please. Eleven months have passed and we see the same onion field, shot from a different perspective. We ate last years crop; we need more onions. We have burgers to top. Image: Onions along the Canal, Arrey NM, March 26, 2009.

- No Percha Dam, no onions. No pecans. No cotton. No chili. No whatever. Not in the Rincon Valley. A little about Percha Dam swiped from the US Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Reclamation, Cultural Resources Program website... - It's deja vu all over again. Looking for a picture to put up today I discovered I spent a couple of days here at Percha Dam State Park on my way up the Rio Grande valley to the Bosque National Wildlife Refuge a year ago to the day. I knew it was about this time in January when I passed through but didn't realize the timing was spot on. Ha! - so what? - Now that it's here I'm torn. This day has been in the wind a long long time; now it's here. Verizon announced today they will be selling iPhones beginning February 10th. I've been hanging on to my old LG cell phone for years in anticipation of this day. Now that it's here I'm torn. Trading in my old phone for an iPhone instantly makes my constant companion, my dedicated iPod Touch, redundant. That's ok. The thing is, though, the great leather case I lavished a week developing and making won't fit the new iPhones. So that becomes instantly redundant as well. Arrgh..... - Yesterday my friends Kate & Terry invited me along for a sunset photo shoot of the Sandhill Cranes gathering to roost in the shallow ponds along the highway at the north end of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I've seen the cranes flying between their roosting and feeding grounds down at Percha Dam State Park and at Pancho Villa State Park and I've seen them feeding with the cows here and there but this was my first experience of them roosting. Emergent democracy
Culture brings us together, usually at a very small scale through mutual belief, trust and common interest. It educes, not compels, behavior. Culture codified is law. It is as inevitable as the day the night that as scale increases, law increases. Law enforced is government. Government does not, in the main, educe behavior, but compels it. Democratic or otherwise, rarely, very rarely, does any concentration of power or wealth desire to see subjects well informed, truly educated, their privacy ensured or their discourse uninhibited. Those are the very things that power and wealth fear most. Old forms of government have every reason to operate in secret, while denying just that privilege to subjects. The people are to be minutely scrutinized while power is to be free of examination.
